Overview

Mylar blankets are Wynn Innovations' premier product. Camp Mylar is an interactive 3D campsite I made to build awareness of them.

The problem

Many people didn't know what Mylar blankets were, or what they could be used for.

Rather than explain it in a list, I built a 3D environment that shows each use in context.

Design

You move through the campsite stop by stop, and each stop shows a different use: weather and tear resistance, water resistance, insulation, and a free roam to finish.

Build

I modelled the environment by hand in Blender, with more than 20 assets, then brought it to the browser with React Three Fiber and Three.js.

Custom shaders, sound and animated transitions between scenes tie it together. It's deployed on Vercel.

What I built

  • A hand-made Blender campsite with 20+ assets
  • Custom shaders
  • Animated transitions between scenes
  • Music and sound

Key decisions

  1. Camp Mylar: One campsite, many uses

    One campsite, many uses

Everything happens at a single campsite, where a Mylar blanket earns its place in many ways outdoors, so each use is shown somewhere believable instead of on its own.

  2. Music brings it to life

Without sound the scene felt plain. Adding music was the finishing touch that made the campsite feel alive.

Outcome

Wynn Innovations now includes the site in emails to new buyers of the blankets who don't yet know all the ways they can be used.
